Elle tient son origine, dans les années 1920, de la volonté d'augmenter les performances de sa voiture. On dépouillait un roadster simple de ses accessoires, on l'équipait d'un moteur plus puissant, et il était prêt pour se mesurer avec les copains, en accélération. Quant à l'origine du mot, elle reste incertaine : peut-être une contraction de "hot roadster", ou une allusion aux bielles ("rods") des moteurs trop poussés qui finissaient par rendre l'âme... Essentiellement basés sur des modèles Ford à châssis séparé, les hot rod se sont étendus en Europe à d'autres marques. Parallèlement, le soin apporté aux réalisations n'a fait qu'augmenter, l'allure ayant finalement autant d'importance, sinon plus, que les performances. La Fiat Ballila présentée aurait été transformée dans un atelier du Gers dans les années 1980. Elle est alors connue sous le nom de "Pom rod", à cause de la teinte vert pomme qui la caractérisait. Depuis, la préparation a été poussée plus loin, avec pose d'un moteur Ford Kent 1300 et peinture rouge Candy. Cette réalisation particulièrement soignée, très remarquée dans les concentrations, a fait l'objet de plusieurs parutions dans la presse. You would strip the parts from an ordinary roadster, fit it with a more powerful engine and then it was ready to compete in acceleration races with your friends' cars. The origin of the word remains in doubt, however. It may be a contraction of "hot roadster", or an allusion to the camshafts ("rods") of heavily gunned engines that ultimately burn out. Primarily based on the monocoque chassis of Ford models, hot rods expanded to include other makes of cars in Europe. In the meantime, the work that went into the enhancements continued to progress, with appearance becoming as much, if not more, important than performance. The Fiat Balilla proposed was apparently modified in a workshop in the Gers department in the 1980s. At the time it was known as the "Pom rod", because of its characteristic apple green colour. Since then, the adjustments have been taken further, with the addition of a Ford Kent 1300 motor and Candy red paint.
