Inspired by the US Army's wartime 'Jeep', developed in haste and intended for short-term, small-scale production, the Land Rover would defy its creators' initial scepticism. Rover bosses the Wilks brothers saw the need for a tough, four-wheel-drive, utility vehicle to serve the needs of the agricultural community in the immediate post-war years, but the Land Rover's runaway success took the company by surprise. The necessity of using aluminium panels at a time of severe steel shortage turned into a positive virtue in the Land Rover's sphere of operations, and the use of existing components - including the P3 saloon's 1,595cc, four-cylinder, sidevalve engine - kept production costs down and cut development time. Progressively developed since its launch in 1948, and modified to serve countless specialist requirements, the ubiquitous Land Rover looks set to continue well into the 21st Century. Originally exported to Regent Motors, of Melbourne, Australia, this short-wheelbase (80") Series I was used for the dealer's own sales brochures. Equipped with the 1,595cc engine, the vehicle was restored to a high standard using all original components in 1993 (by which time it had covered 58,000 miles) and is finished in pale green with silver painted chassis. The private vendor describes it as, "very original" and in "A1" condition throughout. Notable features include correct hydrostatic brakes fitted with stainless-steel lines, new wiring loom, flashing indicators (within sidelights), water/oil gauge, twin wipers, export windscreen flap, new Dunlop Trakgrip tyres, front capstan winch, engine governor and rear PTO with pulley drum. Ready for use with no further work needed, the vehicle is offered with current MoT. The ideal tender vehicle for next year's Revival meeting.
