1964 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII Phase II Convertible Registration no. BNE 348B Chassis no. H-BJ8/30197 Engine no. 29KRU44875 • The ultimate 'Big Healey' • Original right-hand drive car delivered new to Australia • Restored in 2001 • Present family ownership since 2011 • UK registered since 1970 FootnotesWhat would turn out to be the final 'Big Healey' variant, the 3000 Mark III with 148bhp engine, appeared early in 1964 to be followed later in the year by the Phase II version with increased ground clearance – addressing a long-term criticism – and revised rear suspension incorporating twin radius arms instead of a Panhard rod. Top speed was now 121mph and the 0-60mph time dipped below 10 seconds. Despite the antiquity of the basic design the 'Big Healey' remained as popular as ever, though increasingly stringent safety and emissions legislation meant that its days were numbered. Built in December 1964 at BMC's Abingdon works, chassis number 'H-BJ8/30197' was delivered in January 1965 to its first owner in Bathurst, Australia. The car was originally finished in Healey Blue with matching interior. According to the DVLA, its date of first registration in the UK was 16th January 1970. The Healey was restored in 2001, the colour scheme being changed to the present Colorado Red over Ivory with red-piped black leather interior. The car also benefits from a lead-free conversion and is fitted with up-rated fuel pump, Kenlowe fan, alternator, electronic ignition, alloy radiator, stainless steel exhaust and an overdrive. When its late owner bought 'BNE 348B' from Hilton & Moss Sports Cars, Essex in September 2011 it was stated that the car had been used only in the summer since its restoration. The previous owner was a Professor G Southworth of Cambridge. Since its acquisition in 2011 the Healey has been kept garaged and regularly MoT'd. A partial re-spray was carried out in 2020 and the car has been SORN'd for the last few years. When the owner died in 2016 the Healey was left to his wife, and is offered for sale today by her daughter. Accompanying paperwork includes a BMIHT Certificate; driver's handbook; various receipts for maintenance work; a quantity of MoT certificates; DVLA documents; a V5C Registration Certificate; and a current MoT.
