The hugely charismatic AC Cobra has remained the undisputed market leader for more than 25 years within the field of replica cars with DAX and Autocraft having steadily established themselves as much sought after classic sports cars in their own right. For many years now, the clear customer favourite has been the small-block Chevrolet V8; perhaps due to its competitive price and wide choice of power outputs. But other popular engines include units from the Ford small block and all-aluminium Chevrolet LS ranges with Rover V8 and Jaguar units still proving highly popular with some people. It's no exaggeration to say that these cars tend to amaze all who go out in them; harnessing the power with consummate ease and providing levels of grip, composure and ride comfort that simply have to be experienced to be believed. With all AC Cobra style cars, the devil is in the detail. Power is nothing if the look and feel is that of compromise. Starting with the basics, the chassis has been completely shot-blasted and nylon-dipped for long life. The engine is a small block Chevrolet unit with 350ci capacity mated to a TH450 automatic gearbox. Interestingly, the original Cobras came with automatic gearboxes as an option, with a handful of originals still on the road. An oil cooler and high-volume radiator at the front assists matters. The wheels are also correct period items - polished magnesium 'American Racing Mags' - again an option at the time, and shod with new Kumo rubber. In the sunshine, you will also notice the lustrous shine to the paintwork; this is because the paint work was undertaken by one of the McLaren F1 painters and friend of the vendor. The seats are the correct steel rimmed versions and a burr walnut dash and Motolita steering wheel finish off the effect. The driving experience is, as you would expect, exhilarating, with the exhaust a sonorous accompaniment.
