Gerry Marshall was an extraordinary man. His professional driving career spanned four decades, in 2000 chalking up his 600th win in a race at Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit, Norfolk in an Aston Martin DB4. His first Sprint victory though was in 1963 driving a Mini, with his first race win following in 1964 (again in a Mini) and his last (and 625th) on 11th September 2004. He is probably best remembered for his flamboyant and crowd-pleasing style during the 1970's driving for Dealer Team Vauxhall in the racing Firenzas 'Old Nail' and 'Baby Bertha' as well as the V8 Holden-Repco Ventora, 'Big Bertha'. He also won the 1971 Escort Mexico championship, beating future Formula 1 World Champion Jody Scheckter and finished 2nd in the 1974 Avon Tour of Britain driving for the same team as the equally respected rally driver Roger Clark. Marshall's style has been described as ""sideways, on-the-edge cornering that was to distinguish his driving in any car, large or small, front or rear drive.' This outward appearance belied an extraordinary cool-headed ability and intelligence behind the wheel. His first biography, published in 1978, is titled ' Only Here For The Beer' and a tribute edition was re-issued shortly after his death. Gerry was truly a unique individual - his raison d'être was, quite simply, motor racing and cars. His family and friends were immensely proud of him and his many achievements, sometimes through adversity, but always with infectious enthusiasm and flamboyant style. He died of a heart-related illness on April 21st while driving a Chevrolet Camaro at Silverstone; it slid into the gravel and stopped in front of the BRDC suite, where he had spent much of his time drinking. He never lost control of the car. It is with great fondness that we have been allowed to present his Land Rover today by one of his oldest friends. Another fellow racing driver, Kevin Kivlochan, has owned this 'Landy' for many years and, apart from annual trips to the MoT testing station has resided mainly in his garage. Originally supplied by Marshall Wingfield Ltd of Hertfordshire, this has remained in the ownership of the late great Gerry Marshall for many years until it was passed on to Mr. Kivlochan through Gerry's son Gregor. Gerry had an additional rev. counter fitted and it still has stickers all over it detailing his memberships, interests and passions. As good as any history file. These include the Aston Martin Owners Club, The British Racing Drivers Club and Historic Sports Car Club to name but a few. Supplied with a full 12 months MoT test certificate and the knowledge that this is one of the most famous Land Rovers in the UK and most certainly within club racing circles.
