1972 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE 3.5 ESTATE CAR CONVERSION BY CRAYFORD Registration No. GNJ 35L Chassis No. 10805722011202 Engine No. 11698022072262 Light metallic blue with black interior Right hand drive The 280SE 3.5 with its new iron block aluminium head V8 engine was first announced in 1969 and became a highly sought after model by Mercedes enthusiasts. This particular example is an extremely rare conversion to an estate car which was carried out by Crayford Auto Developments in 1972 and was then exibited at the Earls Court Show in October of that year. This actual car was also featured in the Sunday Times preview to the show who were highly complimentary of the quality of the conversion which in 1971 cost ¨1,550. The Autocar featured another Mercedes-Benz conversion by Crayford and were also highly impressed stating that it was 'a very professional finish up to the standard of the factory built model...' According to the secretary of the Crayford owners club this was the only conversion carried out on a V8 out of seven cars converted by Crayford. This example has a few areas of corrosion appearing on the bodywork but generally seems very sound. It has a current MoT (and ten old certificates), Mercedes Service History to 60,000 miles (the mileage is now 78,000) and a number of invoices for recent work including a new exhaust system/shock absorbers/king pins/brake pads/belts/spark plugs and a complete engine tune with a Bosch fuel injection specialist. A large file accompanies this unique and interesting vehicle.
