The Mercedes R107 was launched in 1971 and production continued through to 1989 - a hefty 18 years; the longest single series ever produced by the firm besides the G-Class utility vehicle. The R 107 replaced the W 113 Pagoda SL in 1972 and was replaced by the R 129 SL in 1989. Some 237,000 R 107 SL's were built and about two thirds were sold in the US. The car was essentially a two-seater sports car although a small seating arrangement was available behind the front seats. Mercedes-Benz offered a number of engine choices over the years, the first cars in 1971 being fitted with the 350 engine, a V8 3.5-litre unit. By 1973 a larger 4.5-litre V8 was available, constructed primarily for the US market. The SL Roadster has since become the epitome of how a luxury roadster should look and is as popular today as when first launched. This early 1972 example was registered in January 1973 and is offered in the very rare combination of Aqua Blue with deep blue, hard wearing MB-Tex. We are informed that it was professionally restored by a Mercedes-Benz specialist just nine years ago and has seen little use since, leading to a full re-commission this year by the current vendor. An extremely solid and honest example of such a collectable roadster, this 350SL is presented with good chrome work, interior, optional additional passenger seats and a very good optional hard top. Carpets were replaced just three years ago along with a brand new, deep blue hood and all electricals are working correctly. This SL comes with a fresh MoT test certificate with no advisories at which time it was noted that the car also has near new brake pipes and new rear calipers. Qualifying for a Historic tax classification, this 350 SL Roadster is sure to make a Sunday afternoon drive even more pleasurable.
