Internally known as the Alfa Romeo 916, The Alfa Romeo GTV Spider was effectively the replacement for the then 30 year-old Giulia Spider and was designed by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina. The Gran Turismo Veloce or GTV was planned to re-establish the sporty coupe tradition of Alfa Romeo for the 1990s and at its launch, many journalists commented that Alfa had improved overall build quality considerably and that it came very close to equaling its German rivals, impressive credentials when seated at such a beautiful car. Revamped for the first time in 1998 (Phase 2) with mainly interior changes including new center console, painted letters on skirt seals, changed controls and switches arrangement and different instrument cluster. The 2.0 TS engine has two belt driven balance shafts to improve the smoothness of the engine, all making for what many believed to be the best combination in the GTV despite being pitched against the legendary V6 power plant.
