4 Publications of the Society of Automotive Engineers on Lunar Landing Research Author: Place: Publisher: Society of Automotive Engineers Date: 1960-1961 Description: 4 items: Vistas In Astronautics - 1960 Vol. III, Proceedings of the Third AFOSR (Air Force Office of Scientific Research) Astronautic Symposium, October 1960. 166pp. Cloth. Considers astronautic vehicles, propulsion and communications, bioastronautics and planetary and space environments. Smith, E. A. and R.W. Conno, Norair Division, Northrop Corporation. “Survival Consideration For Interplanetary Missions”. Presented at the Society of Automotive Engineers National Aeronautic Meeting. Los Angeles, October, 1960. 12 pp. + tables. Illustrated. Stapled wrappers. Anderson, E. Z., Martin Marietta Corporation. “Applications Of A Nuclear Vehicle For A Manned Lunar Landing.” Society of Automotive Engineers, 1961. 71 pp. Stapled stiff wrappers. Williams, F. L., H.O. Ruppe, R.G.W. Reichert, Future Projects Office, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama. “A Transportation System To Establish A Manned Lunar Outpost”. Presented at the 1961 Society of Automotive Engineers International Congress, Detroit, January 1961. 9 pp.+tables. Stapled wrappers. Today, the U. S. Air Force is the sole military service of the Space Force. However, at the start of the Space Race, it was far behind the Army and Navy. This may explain why it turned to the Society of Automotive Engineers, despite its traditional title, long active in aviation research, for studies of a lunar landing, a prime goal of NASA at the start of the Kennedy Administration. Other than Colonel Paul Campbell space medicine authority, and NASA Space Director Homer Newell, few of the co-authors of these papers had been prominent in the field before Sputnik. Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 319603
