Autograph letter signed ("J C Calhoun") as Secretary of State, to John Young Mason, Secretary of the Navy, [n.p.], 7 May [1844], one page, 8vo, address leaf with panel in Calhoun's hand , a letter of introduction; Letter signed to the same, Department of State, Washington, 27 September 1844, one and 1/2 pages, 4to : regarding an investigation being made by the Attorney General and another official into "... whether the two Mexican vessels now in the harbor of New York have taken in additional munitions of war or taken any other step which might bring them within the several acts of Congress passed to preserve the neutrality of the United States. It might greatly facilitate the execution of their duties to have the cooperation of the officers at New York and its vicinity subject to the orders of your department..." -- SCOTT, WINFIELD, General . Autograph letter signed ("Winfield Scott"), probably as Commander-in-Chief, to John Young Mason, [n.p.], Tuesday morning, [c. 1844 or 1846-49]. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo , concerning the disposition of "the buildings which constitute the former Bellona Arsenal, near Richmond... under the charge of the Ordnance Department," now vacant," which Scott wants rented, although admitting that the situation is "in no way under my control..."
