70/4410 [Cartes-de-visite and cabinet photographs]. Album containing ±60 carte-de-visite and cabinet-portraits of the Alençon-Orléans family, 2nd half 19th/ early 20th cent., loosely inserted in contemp. gilt dec. mor. album w. metal clasp and catch, a.e.g., 4to. - A few portraits trifle spotted. = Family album with many portraits of the Duchess of Alençon, née Duchess Sophie Charlotte Augustine in Bavaria (1847-1897) of the House of Wittelsbach, and/ or of her daughter Louise (1869-1952). Sophie was the youngest sister of the famous Sissi. She was once engaged to her cousin King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1867, but the wedding was postponed and then cancelled because Ludwig thought Sophie had fallen in love with the court photographer Edgar Hanfstaengl. A year later, Sophie met Prince Ferdinand of Orléans, duc d'Alençon, whom she married that same year. She died a tragic death during a disastrous fire at the Bazar de la Charité in Paris. This album contains portraits of Sophie herself, her husband, her parents(?), her daughter Louise Victoria and son Emmanuel both as young children and in later years (both i.a. with their respective fiancées/ spouses, Prince Alfons of Bavaria and Princess Henriette of Belgium, and also Louise's children), her three brothers, sisters Hélène, Marie Sophie Amalie and Elisabeth/ Sissi (1 carte-de-visite) and possibly also Mathilde, some other unidentified family members, and King Ludwig II (1x together with his then fiancée Sophie). Some photographers (Hanfstaengl not found, alas): Victor Angerer (Ischl), Emil Rabending (Vienna), Adèle (Vienna), C. Pietzner (Vienna), Disdéri (Paris), Délié (Paris), the Misses Fox (Worthing), F. Müller (Munich), L. Haidinger (Zell am See), Fratelli d'Alessandri (Rome), J. Albert (Munich) and A. Wilcke (Innsbruck).
