70/4666 Chinese export watercolours The well behaved son 70/4666 [Chinese export watercolours]. (The well-behaved son). Series of 9 watercolours on pith paper, ±1880, ±20x33 cm. (leaf-size), each within blue paper borders, album bound in contemp. red silk over boards, obl. 4to. - Pith paper of most watercolours dam./ cracked as often (three are in reasonably good condition). = On the basis of a late 19th cent. 4-page manuscript description of the contents of the album 2 watercolours are lacking. The description makes clear that the 9 scenes tell the story of a well-behaved son and his family. It begins with his birthday wishes for one of his parents, then goes on to show a richly dressed wedding table with the family attending. The next scene shows the parents receiving congratulations on occasion of their son's successful exams; in the next image we see a newly born son being bathed. Then follows the ceremonial shaving of the baby's head. In the next scene his mother is breastfeeding him; and, jumping a few years, the boy is seen at school reciting his lesson to his teacher. He does this successfully and receives the distinction of "Sive tsaj"[?]. The final scene shows the son among his family members again. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXV.
