Having seen its Z1000 deposed as top superbike by Honda's outrageous six-cylinder CBX, it was inevitable that Kawasaki would strike back. Enter the Z1300. Launched in 1978 to a fanfare of superlatives - biggest, heaviest, most powerful, fastest - Kawasaki's new flagship was more super-tourer than outright sportsbike, its 140mph top speed notwithstanding. Weighing close to 700lb and producing an astonishing - at that time - 120bhp, the Z1300 promised to be a real handful but in fact handled ‘predictably and reassuringly over virtually any kind of surface’ according to Bike magazine. Only the Big Zed's upright riding position and limited range - despite a six-gallon fuel tank - took the gloss off the stupendous performance afforded by that admirably smooth and torquey six-cylinder engine. Sold in limited numbers, the Z1300 today is a highly sought after modern classic. Representing an exciting opportunity to acquire a totally original and unmolested Z1300, this exceptional example was placed in storage soon after purchase following the death of the original owner’s wife. The machine remained unused in his conservatory for close to 30 years before being purchased by the current owner late last year. It had been the vendor’s intention to restore the machine but due to a change of circumstances it is now offered for sale. There are no documents with this unregistered motorcycle, which is offered for restoration and sold strictly as viewed.
