Comprising a Typed Letter Signed ("Bette Davis"), 1 p, 4to, Hollywood, December 18, 1944, to Doris B. Rankin, on "Hollywood Canteen" stationery, with original transmittal envelope. Bette Davis was the President of the Hollywood Canteen and heavily involved in its mission to bring joy to soldiers through opportunities to dine and dance with female celebrities and civilian women. A film, Hollywood Canteen, was released in 1944 which features Davis as well as many other stars and actual Canteen workers in a dramatization of Canteen activities, which Davis discusses in this letter. The recipient of the letter, Doris Rankin, worked at the Hollywood Canteen, and this lot also contains a "Junior Hostesses" instruction page dated January 1943 in which the hostesses are advised, among other things, never to leave the premises with a serviceman, to carry "essentials such as makeup" with them to the dance floor, and to satisfy their hunger by getting a snack at the "Sandwich Making Dept., and if you wish to, you may donate 5 cents to 25 cents to the kitty." Together with Rankin's Hollywood Canteen picture ID card, a Hollywood U.S.O. citation certificate signed ("Eddie Stewart") recognizing Rankin's contribution to the program, and two Hollywood U.S.O. Club monthly newsletters. 8.5 x 11 in.
