A Carved and Stained Bamboo Paper Holder with Longevity Symbols Joseon dynasty (late 19th century) Formed of seven half-sections of bamboo set into a flat base carved to resemble bamboo nodes, the exteriors of the facets carved in low relief with panels representative of the Ten Signs of Long Life, including panels of crane and stag, doe and phoenix, sun and tortoise, tortoise and sacred fungus, pair of deer, and fungus and clouds framed by borders of pine branches, fungus, rocks and bamboo shoots, the pictorial elements using the yellow color of the bamboo wood against the shallow background, the interior and base stained a darker brown and the whole applied with a yellowish brown varnish 9in. (22.8cm.) high; 9¾in. (24.6cm.) diameter
