Title: A Chart of North and South America, Including the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, with the nearest Coasts of Europe, Africa, and Asia Author: [Green, John, pseud. of Braddock Mead] Place: London Publisher: Thomas Jefferys Date: 1753 [but 1763] Description: Six sheets, each with a separate title, with the general title as listed above in upper margins of sheets I and II. Engraved, uncolored. The sheets are: Sheet I: Chart containing part of the Icy Sea with the adjacent coast of Asia and America. 43x52.5 cm (17x20¾"). Sheet II: Chart comprizing Greenland with the Countries and Islands about Baffin's and Hudson's Bays. 52.5x61 cm) 20¾x24"). Sheet III: Chart containing the coasts of California, New Albion and Russian Discoveries to the North, with the Peninsula of Kamchatka, in Asia, opposite thereto, and Islands, dispersed over the Pacific Ocean, to the north of the line. 42.7x52.3 (16¾x20½"). Sheet IV: Chart of the Atlantic Ocean, with the British, French & Spanish Settlements in North America and the West Indies. 42.3x60 cm (16½x23¾"). Sheet V: Chart containing the greater part of the South Sea to the South of the Line, with the Islands dispersed thro' the same. 42.7x52.3 cm (16¾x20½"). Sheet VI: Chart of South America, comprehending the West Indies, with the adjacent Islands, in the Southern Ocean, and South Sea. 53.3x59.8 cm (21x23½"). Second issue of Green's seminal map; all sheets but IV have imprint dated 1753; sheet IV has date 1762 in margin and date omitted from imprint. Warren Heckrotte remarks that "Stevens -Tree discusses at some length the different issues. The marginal remarks in sheet IV describe a color code, but this has not been used in this copy. Each sheet has extensive remarks and data providing the basis for the presentation. It is a valuable historical document." See the book section of this catalogue for the first issue of the maps with the Remarks. Further Notes from the Files of Warren Heckrotte Watermark : each sheet with Fleur de Lys in shield with crown above and below LVG and countermark IV or VI. Heawood has a number of watermarks like this. I have the first issue of the map with text volume (1753) and the fourth issue, 1775. This second issue appears to be rare. Purchased from Arader who says that the map was purchased from the estate of the Duke of Northumberland in 1978 (maybe so but nothing to demonstrate it and so what anyway). Provenance: Arader, 9/79 References: Stevens-Tree 4(b). All the issues of this map are described. Lot Amendments Condition: Sheet II lower margin trimmed to outer neat line, eliminating any imprint; some charts ill-creased at or near centerfold, a few verso repairs, occasional light marginal stains just intruding into a few images. Very good condition. Item number: 267417
