A Chinese cloisonné 'Lotus pond' brush washer, late 19th or early 20th century, finely decorated with a lotus pond scene to both the interior and exterior of the bowl, the foot incised with the four-character mark lao tian li zhi, 25.5cm diameter Provenance: According to the family notes this bowl was given, as a wedding present from Oei Hui-lan, to Joseph B. Carson (2nd Secretary to H.B.M., Legation in Peking) and his wife Tatiana Carson (née Staheyeff). They were married in the garden of the British legation in Peking, in May 1923. Oei Hui-lan, known as Madame Wellington Koo, was a Chinese socialite and style icon, who was first married to British consular agent Beauchamp Caulfield-Stoker (1909 to 1920) and then to the pre-communist Chinese statesman Wellington Koo.
