A Chinese jade ceremonial axe head. Possibly late Neolithic, Longshan culture. The thinly cut slice of jade with tapered sides and a pierced suspension whole near the top is incised with a band of decoration and depicts a stylised scrolling face beneath, the stone of a translucent spinach green tone. Although several variations of these blades have been discovered, the function is as yet unknown but are thought to perhaps represent some kind of emblem or marker to denote a level of rank or status. 8.1 in (20.5 cm) length.
