A Collection of Medals for the Anglo-Boer War Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (6794 Pte. W. Gardner, Midd’x. Regt.) correction to regiment, very fine £80-100 Footnote William Henry Gardner was born in London. A Porter by occupation and a member of the 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (Militia), he attested for short service with the regulars at Hounslow on 19 December 1900, aged 18 years, 1 month. Posted to the 3rd Battalion Middlesex Regiment. With the battalion he served on St. Helena guarding Boer prisoners-of-war, March-September 1902; he then served in South Africa, September 1902-April 1906. His military career contains a catalogue of offences and punishments: October 1901 - tried and sentenced by the civil powers for assaulting a police constable; December 1902 - tried and sentenced for sleeping at his post; January 1903 - tried and sentenced for disobeying a lawful command and striking his superior officer and using threatening language; September 1905 - tried and sentenced for using insubordinate language. Unsurprisingly, he was discharged with ignominy from the service on 6 April 1906. With copied service papers and roll extract.
