A Composite 20-Bore French Silver-Mounted D.B. Flintlock Sporting Gun The barrels by Boutet à Versailles, No. 352, early 19th Century With sighted two-stage barrels each signed and numbered in gold and decorated at the rear of the recessed breeches with a gilt band of stars (gilding worn), and struck on the upper side of each breech with two Boutet barrelsmith's marks (one of them Neue Støckel 97), and on the underside with a further Boutet mark and barrelsmith's mark MD over two crossed branches, silver-lined touch-holes, grooved engraved tang, engraved flat bevelled locks with spurious 'Boutet à Versailles' signature and each with 'French' cock and silver-lined rainproof pan, figured walnut half-stock (repaired) carved in relief behind the barrel tang and rear ramrod-pipe, and with a monster-head behind the grip, raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, full silver mounts cast and chased in high relief with neo-classical ornament involving masks of a fawn and a satyr, Mercury, and a putto, silver rear sling mount, white metal ramrod-pipe bearing the iron front sling mount, gold escutcheon engraved with initals 'JC', and associated brass-tipped ramrod (some pitting to iron parts), French provincial silver marks for 1809-1819, silver maker's mark CC 30in.
