A DATED LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA
MING DYNASTY, DATED 2ND YEAR OF ZHENGTONG, CORRESPONDING TO 1437, AND OF THE PERIOD
A DATED LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA MING DYNASTY, DATED 2ND YEAR OF ZHENGTONG, CORRESPONDING TO 1437, AND OF THE PERIOD The bodhisattva is depicted seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, with hands held in dhyana mudra , wearing a tassel-hung beaded necklace and layered robes with incised floral scrolls at the hems. The hair is dressed in twisted plaits that trail down the shoulders and pulled up into a tall coiffure behind the crown centered by Shakyamuni Buddha. There is an inscription in a line at the bottom of the base which may be translated as 'Made in Beijing on the 8th day, twelfth month of the second year in the Zhengtong reign (1437)'. 10½ in. (26.7 cm.) high
