Donnan to collect and receive the hire of my Negro man named Andrew to South Side Rail Road for 1865.The hire of whom will be $350 and to attend to the lease to contract him to dispose of him in any way he may think best. Hereby ratifying what he may do in the premises. Given under my hand & seal this the 11th day of Jan 1865. [signed] James Aldridge [seal] City of Petersburg, to wit: This day James Aldridge personally appeared before me & acknowledged the foregoing as Warrant & Deed. Given under my hand this 11th day of Jan 1865 Acknowledged before me William Robertson Notary Public Va. The Southside Railroad was one of five railroad lines that met in Petersburg. Thousands of Confederate soldiers rode into the city on this railroad. After the war, former Brigadier General William “Billy” Mahone’s office was on the second floor, with his desk overlooking the city. The depot building stands today as the oldest railroad station in Virginia. Condition: Ink on lined white ledger-paper, docketed on reverse: “Jas. Aldridge to Power of Attorney A. Donnan.” Torn along top edge, otherwise good condition.
