A fine early 19th-Century lacquered-brass Jones Most Improved compound monocular microscope, signed on the foot Cary London , in the original fitted case -- 35cm. (13¾in.) wide . See Colour Illustrations and Detail A small tube screws into the side of the tapered barrel of the microscope for the mounting of a bull's-eye condensor. The barrel is threaded to screw into the end of a limb mounted atop the main pillar of the instrument. The limb can be adjusted by sliding it forwards or backwards through the mounting. The eared stage is adjustable via rack and pinion up and down the main pillar and incorporates a simple slide holder. It is also arranged to turn sideways for storage. A bull's-eye condensor is mounted on a sleeve on the pillar below the stage and above the plano-concave substage mirror ( concave side much damaged ). The pillar is mounted via a compass joint to a tapering column with three folding, splayed feet. The accessories fit into shaped compartments in the case and include: a brass objective disc with six lenses, arranged to be rotated into place as needed; a high-power objective with a domed and threaded brass cap; silvered- and blackened lieberkuhn objectives, and a stage-mounted lieberkuhn; a mounting limb and bull's-eye condensor; brass tweezers; stage forceps; an additional stage with central circular aperture, and two smaller circular apertures either side; a sprung slider holder; a live box and a frog plate; a brass substage condensor cone; an ivory drum for mica slide covers and retaining rings ( both lids stuck ); a smaller, conical ivory container with threaded lid ( empty - purpose unknown ); two plano-concave glass discs and an ivory disc; six ivory sliders, each with four specimen cells; a brass slider with four empty cells and a butterfly handle; two long fruitwood sliders, each with five specimen cells; and two lignum vitae sliders, each with four recesses for specimens. The fitted mahogany case has green felt padding inside, two brass hooks and eyes, and the original key.
