Lot of 5 large format photographs, each 6.1 x 9.25 in., housed in card-stock mats. Portraits capture individual subjects in outdoor settings and feature lengthy, handwritten inscriptions on verso. Notably includes photograph of a woman wearing round glasses, seated on a porch step with three baskets arranged on a blanket, as well as a photograph of a young Native American woman in traditional attire, reading an issue of LIFE magainze, with a dog reclining at left. Caption on verso reads in part: "Harriet Shelton Williams in front of one of her fathers totems. She is the grand niece of 'Old Chief Shah-Shail' one of the signers of the treaty and daughter of Chief Wha-cah-dub of the Snohomish tribe. . . Mary G. Allen made full life size painting of her -." Notations indicate that this and other photographs were used as studies for paintings by Washington-based painters Lily Norling Hardwick (1890-1944) and Mary Gertrude Stockbridge Allen (1869-1949).
