Beschreibung:

A FINE OAK CHAIR BY CHARLES ROHLFS BUFFALO, 1901 The chair back with octagonal stiles ending in cushion-form finials, the backrest of four horizontal carved pieces, the seat apron with cut-out border, joined to the legs with characteristic wooden pegs, carved with Rohlfs insignia-- 47½in. (120.6cm.) high cf. Hanks, Gebhard, Bletter, McCoy, Filler, and Phillips, High Styles , Whitney Museum of American Art, 1985, p. 20, fig. 1.18 for the model (dated 1901) exhibited at the exhbition of the same title, September 19, 1985-February 16, 1986; and The International Studio , July 1909, pl. XXIV for a similar model Another example of this model also dated 1901 with a label affixed to the bottom 'The Property of Darwin Martin' is known to exist in a New York private collection. It is not surprising that Darwin D. Martin would have patronized Rohlfs as well as Frank Lloyd Wright as Rohlfs was already recognized internationally at the turn of the century. By 1900 Rohlfs had been published in Europe and was in preparation to participate in the Turin 1902 Exhibition in Italy A similar chair was sold in these rooms on lot 38
