A FRENCH REPUBLICAN ORMOLU PENDULE PORTATIVE SHOWING BOTH DECIMAL AND DUODECIMAL TIME AND STRIKING DECIMAL TIME PIERRE BAZILE LEPAUTE, PARIS. DATED YEAR 3 (1794) CASE: substantially constructed, faceted handle to top, balustraded gallery, front panel with matted reserves, sides with glazed panels (rear glass lacking), four milled feet DIAL: white enamel, its reverse inscribed 'Lep D' (?); outer ring calibrated with twice XII Roman chapters for standard duodecimal time, also with half and quarter hour divisions; inner ring calibrated with 1-10 Arabic chapters to show Republican decimal time, also with ten minute divisions; signed to the centre 'Lepaute a Paris'; ormolu Breguet-type decimal hands, the end of the hour hand pierced with star design and indicating standard hours MOVEMENT: rectangular plates and triple going barrels (two for decimal strike train and one for the time), anchor escapement, back plate with two countwheels for striking respectively the hours and ten minutes on two bells (the hours with one hammer and the ten minutes with two), back plate signed 'P. B. Lepaute à Paris an 3 ème' above pendulum holdfast; knife-edge suspended pendulum, winding key 9¼ in. (23 cm.) high; 6 in. (15 cm.) wide; 4 in. (10 cm.) deep
