MARK OF LEWIS HERNE AND FRANCOIS BUTTY, LONDON, 1762
A GEORGE III SILVER EPERGNE MARK OF LEWIS HERNE AND FRANCOIS BUTTY, LONDON, 1762 The base modelled as four scrolling openwork foliage feet hung between openwork flower, foliage and shell swags, with a detachable scrolling arm at each foot supporting a detachable bowl with openwork scroll and foliage border and four further arms suspending a pierced basket with an overhead swing handle, with a central basket with a detachable pierced collar, each piece engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked near rim of body, on each arm and under each basket, the collar apparently unmarked, further engraved under the main basket with a scratchweight '242"17' 17½ in. (44.5 cm.) high 24¾ in. (63 cm.) wide 242 oz. (7,529 gr.) The arms are those of Durrant for Sir Thomas Durrant of Scottow, later 1st Bt. (d. 1790), who married Susannah (d. 1833), eldest daughter of Hambleton Custance in 1773. He was created a baronet in 1784, the year in which he served as High Sheriff of Norfolk.
