A HARLEQUIN PAIR OF GEORGE IV GILT BRASS-MOUNTED BOULLE TORTOISESHELL STRIKING MANTEL/TRAVEL CLOCKS ONE SIGNED FOR LITHERLAND, DAVIES & CO., LIVERPOOL, ITS MOVEMENT BY J. CONDLIFF, LIVERPOOL. CIRCA 1825 CASES: each of architectural form with foliate cast handle and engine-turned finials, brass-lined arched side panels and rear door, brass-lined angles, on milled brass feet, one with contre-partie boullework and the other with premier partie PREMIER-PARTIE DIAL: gilt engine-turned mask to white enamel chapter disc, strike/silent disc above, blued steel moon hands PREMIER-PARTIE MOVEMENT: five pillars joining shouldered plates with engraved borders, twin chain fusees, maintaining power, cut bimetallic lever balance positioned on a sub assembly to the back plate, rack strike/trip repeat on bell, the front plate numbered '8398' (apparently for Thwaites & Reed, London) CONTRE-PARTIE DIAL: gilt engine-turned mask and centre, with white enamel chapter ring, blued steel moon hands CONTRE-PARTIE MOVEMENT: five pillars joining shouldered plates, twin chain fusees, anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, the front plate stamped for 'J. CONDLIFF/LIVERPOOL', the back plate signed 'Litherland Davies & Co./LIVERPOOL; pendulum, one winding key, two case keys Each -- 9¼ in. (23.5 cm.) high, handle down; 5½ in. (14 cm.) wide; 4¾ in.
