A HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND HISTORIC GOLD, DIAMOND AND EMERALD SET POCKET WATCH BOUGHT BY THE EMPRESS MARIE-LOUISE OF FRANCE IN 1813. Breguet, Montre Simple, No.2727, 1812. engine turned gilt dial with applied silvered eccentric Roman chapter ring, avance/retard sector at 6, signed Breguet 1812, No/2727 within two cartouches, blued steel moon hands, frosted gilt movement with lever escapement, case numbered 2727/3226 and with diamond and emerald set border, shuttered winding holes, the central panel overlaid with green guilloche enamel, suspension loop with chain with male and female ratchet key, diameter 37mm. with Breguet certificate dated 27th June 1931 confirming that the watch was purchased by L'Imperatrice on 27th December 1813 and a fitted mid-19th Century case by Mellerio, Paris, the top embossed with the initials F.L.B. beneath a coronet, the inside inscribed Donne par Napoleon I A Madame Le Marquise De Boubers. PROVENANCE Empress Marie-Louise of France, second wife of Napoleon I. Napoleon I The Marquise de Boubers Baron di Lauriston, Chateau de Rhocon Coulanges Loire et Cher. Thence by descent to the present owner. This watch was purchased for 2000 Francs, by the Empress Marie-Louise on 27th December 1813, the year she made several purchases from Breguet. Enamel and gem set watches were made in quite small numbers but were popular despite their high price. Nearly every member of the Bonaparte family owned at least one example. This is the first time that this particular watch has been offered for sale and has been in family ownership since it was presented by Napoleon I to La Marquise de Boubers. The Marqise de Boubers was the wife of General Lauriston, an important figure in the life of Napoleon and who he had known since his days at the Artillery School. General Lauriston held diplomatic posts in Copenhagen and London during the Empire.
