Engraved portrait frontispiece, folding map, 4 engraved plates. (12mo) 7x4, modern full brown calf, morocco lettering pieces. First Edition. Rare narrative of the Hawaiian Mission's two-month tour of the Island of Hawaii. Though the primary purpose of the party was ultimately to spread the Gospel, much of the text deals with the geographical and natural features of the island as well as aspects of Hawaiian culture. an English missionary, Rev. William Ellis (1794-1872) was accompanied by three American missionaries - Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop, and Joseph Goodrich - the "Journal" is a composite of their individual observations. Ellis rewrote and expanded the text and published his "Narrative of a Tour through the Hawaiian Islands" the following year. Forbes 600; Hill 545 (for the later work only). Lot Amendments Condition: Text and plates somewhat foxed and stained; old tape repairs to map folds, but about very good in fine binding. Item number: 168401
