A KOSHIRA-E (MOUNTING) FOR A WAKIZASHI (SHORT SWORD)Edo period (1615-1868), mid 19th century The saya (scabbard) finished in brown and black tamenuri lacquer with incised marks emulating wood grain; the tsuka (hilt) covered in same (rayskin) with black silk tsukamaki wrapping in lozenge pattern; the principal metal fittings comprising kashira (hilt pommel), menuki (hilt grips), fuchi (hilt collar), tsuba (sword guard), kogai (skewer), kurigata (cord runner), and kojiri (butt piece), the kozuka (handled knife) missing, all of gold or shakudo nanako and gold chiselled and inlaid with dragons and clouds; the kogai signed Eijusai; held together by a wood tsukuri blade and with a brocade silk storage bag and wood label; with a brocade bag. 80.6cm (31¾in) long.
