Includes the extremely scarce first edition of the first volume, in this case the variant with the vertical bar between the E and the T in Grasset on the title-page. A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu (translated as In Search of Lost Time, also Remembrance of Things Past) is considered by many to be the greatest novel of the 20th century, and is certainly the finest piece of sustained modernist literature in the French language. The publication was interrupted by the outbreak of the first world war, and the it was not until five years after Proust's death in 1922 that the publication of the novel was completed. The second volume (A l'Ombre...) with printed paper label on spine above 5 francs price reading "Majoration temporaire cinquante pour cent." Lot Amendments Condition: Moderate darkening to a few of the wrappers, some mild soiling (including to the first volume, which has some corner wear), a few with wrappers starting to split away from the text block at the hinges, vertical creasing to some of the spines, a bit of light foxing within, overall in near fine condition.
