A LARGE AND UNUSUAL LAC BURGAUTE, ABALONE, AND DARK HARDWOOD BOTTLEThe Yaji Master, Japan, 1854-1920
Of elongated spade shape, the main faces applied with large irregular abalone mother-of-pearl panels with orange-red inclusions, one side carved with two scholars conversing in a pavilion surrounded by trees, the other side with a unicorn sea-beast amidst waves, the narrow sides with a star-pattern cell ground in lac burgaute between a dark hardwood foot and neck.
