A LARGE CREAMY BEIGE AND BLACKISH-GREY SOAPSTONE SEAL QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) Of irregular boulder form and triangular section, the seal is carved through the creamy white surface to the black stone beneath with a vertical scene depicting various immortals and mythical creatures including a sea dragon, a tortoise, and Zhang Qian with other figures in a log raft. The reverse is inscribed with a Tang dynasty essay on the dragon, by Han Yu. The seal-face is inscribed with a phrase from the Zhuzi zhi jia ge yan by Zhu Xi, which may be translated as, 'Think three times on the moment. It is wrong not to think peaceful thoughts.' 7 7/8 in.
