A late 19th/early 20th-Century British 30-inch diameter terrestrial library globe
A late 19th/early 20th-Century British 30-inch diameter terrestrial library globe, 30 INCH TERRESTRIAL GLOBE BY W.& A.K. JOHNSTON. LIMITED. Geographers, Engravers & Printers, EDINBURGH & LONDON made up of two sets of 36 chromolithographed half-gores and two polar calottes, with graduated equatorial band, ecliptic and Greenwich meridian, the oceans with an analemma, steamship routes and dated submarine telegraph cables in the North Atlantic, Antarctica showing Enderby's, Wilkes and Graham Land, the continents with nation states delicately shaded in green, yellow and orange with towns, cities, rivers, lakes, mountains and deserts, the Austro-Hungarian Empire shown as pre-WWI ( numerous areas of replaced copied gores, including equatorial band, areas of discolouration throughout ), with stamped brass meridian and two hour dials, the hand-coloured copied horizon ring with days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with pictures and an equation of time, on a heavy mahogany stand with four baluster-turned and reeded legs with castors and concave triform stretcher with bun meridian support and compass box screwed on an arm beneath with engraved paper and needle ( restored, later glass ) -- 124.5cm. (49in.) high
