A MAGNIFICENT 30.02 CARAT BURMESE ‘ROYAL BLUE’ SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND RING,BY WILLIAM GOLDBERG
Set with a rectangular-shaped sapphire weighing 30.02 carats, flanked on either side by tapered-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum, ring size 7 3/4 Signed William Goldberg and no. R 5582 Accompanied by report no. 81613 dated 24 August 2015 from SSEF stating that the 30.028 carat sapphire is of Burma (Myanmar) origin, blue color of strong saturation (the color of this sapphire may also be called “royal blue” in the trade),with no indications of heating Also accompanied by an appendix letter “Exceptional Sapphire” stating that “The natural sapphire described in Gemstone report No. 81613 from the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF possesses extraordinary characteristics and merits special mention and appreciation. The described gemstone exhibits a remarkable size and weight of 30.028 ct,combined with an attractive saturated blue color and an outstanding purity. Its color is further pronounced by its well-proportioned octagonal cutting style, resulting in vivid blue hues due to multiple internal reflections. The small inclusions found by microscopic examination and the analyzed properties are consistent with those found in sapphires from the classical mines in Burma (Myanmar). Its attractive saturated blue color - poetically also referred to as ‘royal blue’- is due to a combination of well-balanced trace elements in the gemstone, typical and characteristic for the finest sapphires of Mogok,Burma. In addition to these qualities, this sapphire has been spared exposure to heat treatment and its clarity and color are thus all natural.A natural sapphire from Burma of this size and quality is rare and exceptional.” Accompanied by report no.0703514 dated 21 March 2007 from the Gübelin stating that 30.02 carats sapphire is of Burma(Myanmar) origin, with no indications of heating Blue sapphires have been signifying an elegant temperament of loyalty, faithfulness, love and honesty,as well as supreme power. It has been gaining admiration from royal families over the years worldwide. Sapphires are also frequently used in religious ornaments. In ancient times it is said they have mysterious and supernatural qualities. Christian ministers often wore rings inlaid with sapphires because the color is reminiscent of the sky and the sea: a symbol of heaven. As early as the ancient Egyptian,Roman, and Greek ages, sapphires were used to decorate churches and monasteries, even as ritual tributes at times. Sapphires from Burma can command some of the highest prices on the sapphire market. Due to trace elements iron and titanium,Burma’s deposits produce sapphires of rich and intense hue, which stones from other sources are judged against. Gemologists believe that sapphires from Burma form in igneous rocks or pegmatites that have undergone metamorphism. These conditions cause most of the gem deposits are heavily fractured, with an abundance of rutile silk. Crystals are often broken up under complex growth conditions. Therefore it is extremely rare for a sapphire to possess equally astonishing weight and clarity. Lot 2157 offered at this auction is set upon a center sapphire with an impressive 30.02 carat body weight. The octagonal step cutting style reveals its unrivaled eye-clean internal environment and even distribution of color. What is more, the attractive saturated blue color of this sapphire merits a special appendix letter from the SSEF lab. In the letter, the color is referred to as “Royal Blue”,the most prestigious of colors. The style of the mounting is simple yet exquisite. The ring brings out the gem material’s elegance and classical extravagance in its purest form. Like many other gems,Burmese sapphires are often heat-treated to reduce their characteristic silk inclusions or lighten their color. Lot 2157 has been spared any exposure to heat treatment. Therefore its luster, transparency and color are all natural thus making it truly rare and exceptional.
