Approximately 850 of these were produced from 1857 to 1862. Top of the barrel is stamped "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14 1854". This is one of the earliest surviving examples that remains in all original excellent condition. The barrel still retains some factory original shiny blue in flutes with the balance a mix of blue and brown patina. Brass frame is untouched and is a rich mustard color. There are traces of darkened case colors on hammer. Serial No. 5 is stamped inside the frame and on several of the internal parts, as well as stamped inside both of the walnut grip panels. Operates perfectly with a strong clean bore. Grips are excellent, retaining a majority of the original varnish. We are including several large pictures of the internal parts stamped "5". A nearly identical factory walnut case with red felt lining can be seen on page 88 in the book titled "Volcanic Firearms" by Lewis and Rutter. This is an exceptional example of the fifth pistol manufactured at the then-new New Haven Arms factory, which was the same location that had been rented by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. The factory listed the 3-1/2" barrel Model as a 4" for advertising purposes and the original Broadside listed the No. 4" at $12 with an additional $1.50 for plating and engraving. In addition of the being one of the lowest serial numbers, the original condition is outstanding and the original display case is also in excellent condition with the original key.
