Beschreibung:

A North Italian ebony and ivory inlaid centre table inlaid overall with scrolling foliate designs, the rectangular moulded top with central rounded rectangular medallion depicting sea-gods within strapwork borders and corner roundels of putti above two frieze drawers, on faceted tapering legs and turned feet joined by flattened stretchers with central urn finial, mid 19th Century, probably Milan -- 53½in. (136cm.) wide, 32½in. (82.5cm.) deep, 31in. (79cm.) high. It is interesting to note that most of the designs of this table are cut in the ebony on an ivory ground, indicating that this may originally have beeen part of a pair of tables, the other with designs in ivory on an ebony ground; in a similar fashion to pairs of Boulle furniture in premiere and contre partie. c.f. A more elaborate inlaid Milanese centre table with similar compartmented top, sold Sothebys, Bond St, 8 June, 1990, Lot 147.
