A pair of George I giltwood and gesso torcheres, circa 1720, in the manner of James Moore decorated throughout with foliate motifs and lattice reserves, each circular top with moulded edge above a hexagonal tapering stem centred by a gadrooned terminal, on triple S shaped downswept legs with scroll terminals, each 118cm high, each top 36cm diameter Provenance: Private Collection, Scotland This model of torchere was popular during the first half of the 18th century and were often made ensuite with a pier mirror and table. James Moore has been recognised as the foremost maker with this gilt gesso technique having supplied pieces to Hampton Court, Blenheim Palace and Boughton castle.
