A PAIR OF GEORGE II SILVER CANDLESTICKS MARK OF PETER ARCHAMBO LONDON, 1744 Each on shaped square base and with baluster stem and vase-shaped socket, the bases cast and chased with male and female masks, two vacant cartouches, shells, scrolls and foliage, the stems with shell and Hercules and male mask angles, the sockets and detachable nozzles with foliage borders, engraved beneath the bases with initials, the bases each later engraved with a coat-of-arms, marked on bases, the nozzles unmarked 9 in. (23 cm.) high 53 oz. (1,650 gr.) The arms are those of Hilton, presumably for John Hilton (d.1746) of Hilton Castle, co. Durham. Hilton was M.P. of Carlise in 1727. (2)
