Lot details China, 1661-1722. The large porcelain dishes with sides rising to a barbed rim, the interior vividly painted depicting a palace garden with a pavilion, a deer, and various flowers. The cavetto with overlapping floral border vignettes, flower branches to the reverse, details in gilt and iron red above the glaze overall. The base with a lozenge mark within a double circle in underglaze blue. Provenance: From a private collection in New York, USA. The base of one charger with an old Christie’s label ‘13-OCT-16 Sale 12198 Lot 178’. Condition: Commensurate with age. Both chargers with several visible hairlines, each with at least one small chip to rim showing an old fill, extensive fritting to rim, some minor chipping to foot, manufacturing imperfections such as glaze flaking, general wear and traces of use. No hidden damages. Presenting very well with the enamels overall still very crisp! Weight: 1,896 g and 1,702 g Dimensions: Diameter 38.5 cm and 38.2 cm During the early Qing dynasty, up until the early 1680s, conditions were unsettled in China and the making of Imperial wares as well as the use of reign marks on porcelain was restricted in various ways. During this period, different types of other marks came into use, including lozenge marks, lingzhi fungus marks, and double circles. Literature comparison: A related charger is in the collection of the Fondation Georges et Marie Vergottis (Lausanne) and illustrated by John Ayers in ‘La collection de porcelaines chinoises de Marie Vergottis’, p. 83, no. 55.
