(Old Master Paintings & Drawings, 22nd April 2021) A PAIR OF VENETIAN LATE 17/18TH CENTURY CARVED AND GILDED FRAMES A PAIR OF VENETIAN LATE 17/18TH CENTURY CARVED AND GILDED FRAMES the outer border with elaborately scrolled and pierced foliage, with further imbricated scrolls running to acanthus corners, carved in high relief, cavetto sight edge(s) 21 14.5 cm (sight edge) 12 cm (section depth) (2) Carved in bold relief, and gilded in gold leaf, the gilding served an important purpose - a source of light in dark interiors and created to dazzle when illuminated by the light of candles. As intended they become a rich source of glowing golden light bathing the works within. The common use of softwood from the Poplar tree allows for such sumptuous rich heavy carvings often associated with the Florentine, Venetian, and Bolognese studios.
