Painted by Anton Schwendt with signed miniature portraits of the Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and his consort Princess Sophie von Bayern within oval cartouches with gilt oak-leaf patterns on a polished gold ground, the double handles shaped as winged caryatids over a pine-cone terminal, the flaring rim with a band of circles of ivy leaves and stars, the reverse of each vase with a continuous band of finely tooled and matt foliage, this pattern repeated around the lower part of each vase and foot, standing on square bases, 25cm high, vase with portrait of the Archduke: shield mark in underglaze blue, impressed date mark (1)826 and 23, 1 in iron red; vase with portrait of the Archduchess: impressed shield mark and date mark (1)828 and 40, 2 in iron red, black collector's mark 22 (2)
