Title: A Perfect Narrative of the Whole Proceedings of the High Court of Justice in the Tryal of the King in Westminster Hall, on Saturday the 20, and Monday the 22 of this Instant January. [with] A Continuation of the Narrative Being the Third and Fourth Days Proceedings [with] A Continuation of the Narrative Being the Last and Final Dayes Proceedings... Author: ** Place: London Publisher: John Playford Date: January 23, 25, & 29, 1648 [i.e. 1649] Description: 3 volumes. 16; 8; 15 pp. (8vo) 7¼x5½, disbound, laid loosely into blue paper wrappers. First Editions. Rare contemporary daily accounts of the trial on charges of high treason and "other high crimes" of Charles I of England, printed while the trial was ongoing. Charges to which Charles refused to enter a plea, claiming that no court had jurisdiction over a monarch. He believed that his own authority to rule had been given to him by God and by the traditions and laws of England when he was crowned and anointed, and that the power wielded by those trying him was simply that of force of arms. Charles was ultimately convicted and was beheaded on January 30, 1649. Lot Amendments Condition: Disbound, some light wear and soiling, title page to second part trimmed at bottom; else very good. Item number: 206814
