Newbery Date: 1756 Description: 144 pp. Woodcut illustrations. 11x7.5 cm (4¼x3") original floral patterned paper-covered boards, rebacked at an early date with calf backstrip, custom cloth box. Seventh Edition. Volume I, stated on title page, though complete in itself. Volume 2 was published as The Museum for Young Gentlemen and Ladies. Includes early appearances of Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood. Rare in all editions, OCLC WorldCat locates only 3 copies of any earlier editions (1751 (2 copies) & 1753). This edition excessively rare, with no copies located by ESTC, or COPAC, and OCLC WorldCat locates only the Princeton University copy. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards worn, early engraving pasted inside front cover, ownership signatures on front free endpaper and rear pastedown endpaper (Susanna Kingsford, 1759), rear free endpaper lacking; some wear and foxing; very good.
