Title: A Proposal for a Simplified Calendar Author: Philip, Alexander Place: London Publisher: Keegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. Date: 1907 Description: 28, [4] pp. With 2 letters by the author tipped in. (8vo), later quarter red morocco and cloth, gilt spine. First Edition. A rare pamphlet proposing a simplified, universal calendar. With the decorative bookplate of Hew Morrison. Two related letters by the author, one in manuscript, addressed to Mr. Morrison are tipped in. Alexander Philip was a Scottish solicitor and campaigner for calendar reform. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, Edinburgh in 1913. The main change that Alexander Philip advocated for was the transfer of a day from August to February to provide each quarter with 91 days, 13 weeks and 3 months, so that each quarter would be identical and thus there would be a fixed day each year for New Year. His suggestions were incorporated into the Calendar Reform Bill in 1912. An interesting rarity; only 7 copies care found in OCLC, and no previous auction records could be located. Lot Amendments Condition: Light rubbing to joints and extremities; toning and foxing to page margins; very good. Item number: 287338
