MARKED O. KURLIUKOV, MOSCOW, 1899-1904
A RARE AND UNUSUAL GEM-SET SILVER-GILT, CLOISONNÉ AND GUILLOCHÉ ENAMEL HANDLED DISH MARKED O. KURLIUKOV, MOSCOW, 1899-1904 Shaped navette with rounded corners, on four ball feet, the interior enamelled overall, centring a shaded varicolour scene of Sadko playing his gusli by Lake Il'men, the two daughters of the Sea-King emerging from the waves, his ships and the city of Novgorod in the distance, beneath sun rays enamelled in pale pink over a speckled guilloché ground, bordered by varicolour floral and foliate scrolls on a cream ground, all within wirework borders set with hardstone cabochons, the shaped swing handle similarly decorated, the underside with presentation inscription to Arthur Nikisch dated 1904, marked in field 11½ in. (29 cm.) wide The inscription reads: 'Dem grossen Meister Arthur Nikisch in Bewunderung & Freundschaft Ludmilla & Ludwig Metzl Moskau den 14./27. April 1904'
