A RARE 'CHICKEN-BONE' JADE CARVED BOWL18th century Carved in relief to the exterior with blooming flower heads including lotuses on a continuous undulating leafy branch, the interior also carved in high relief with a leafy plant with berries, the roots finely detailed, and a lingzhi fungus, the stone of mottled creamy beige and grey tone, wood stand, box. 12.7cm (5in) diam (3).Footnotes十八世紀 雞骨玉雕「萬年如意」紋洗 Provenance: an American private collection, acquired prior to the 1960s Christie's South Kensington, 13 May 2016, lot 513 來源:美國私人收藏,於二十世紀六十年代前入藏 倫敦佳士得南肯辛頓,2016年5月13日,拍品編號513 The present lot is very rare for both the style of carving as well as being 'chicken bone' jade. Though perhaps influenced by Mughal jades with their fluid floral designs, the present bowl does not adhere to a symmetrical pattern, but appears almost to have been designed freehand, as the flowers meander across the exterior freely. The present bowl is also laden with auspicious symbolism. The interior is carved with the sturdy evergreen Rohdea Japonica which in Chinese is known as the 'ten-thousand year green' (wannianqing 萬年青). The bright green leaves symbolise continued growth and happiness, while the clusters of berries (which are red), symbolise the wish for numerous descendants. See a white jade bowl with delineated lotus design with similarly loose treatment of the floral design, Jiaqing four-character mark and of the period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, 10, Beijing, 2011, p.220, no.171. Compare also with a related 'chicken bone' jade tripod incense burner and cover, Qianlong, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 24 November 2012, lot 216.
