John Whitehurst, Derby The inverted L-shaped frame with wide upright trunk surmounted by a hemispherical turned cresting and terminating in a flat-fronted turned cistern cover, with (later) mercury thermometer plate, the horizontal upper section set with twin angled tubes, the lower running from 28 to 29.5 inches over a 15 inch long scale, thereby giving a ten times magnification, the matching upper tube running from 29.5 to 31 inches with engraved predictions for Stormy, Much Rain, Rain, Change, Fair, Settled Fair and Very Dry, each terminating in engraved masonic symbols, and with a friction-fit shaped brass pointer mounted on a central brass rod, the trunk 99cm (39in) high.
