A Rare Irish Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss By Gouers (sic), Dublin, Mid-18th CenturyWith three-stage barrel flared at the muzzle and engraved 'DUBLIN' along the breech in front of a band of foliage at the rear, grooved engraved tang, signed rounded lock with slender moulded border, cock en suite, moulded figured full stock carved with a shell in low relief behind the apron around the barrel tang, cast and chased brass mounts comprising side-plate pierced with a martial trophy centred on a foliate cartouche and involving a monster and a profile head, vacant foliate escutcheon, butt-plate engraved with foliate borders along the heel tang (extreme tip missing), border engraved trigger-guard (rear of tang replaced) with foliate finial and engraved with a small flower-head on the bow, baluster ramrod-pipes, and brass-capped wooden ramrod, Irish proof marks 41 cm. barrelFootnotesProvenance Sotheby's London, Arms & Armour And Militaria, 23 November 1982, lot 238 Garrett records a John Govers in Dame Street, Dublin between 1745 and 1774.
